[Discuss] Cannot restore from Backintime (Ubuntu)

The main HD on my wife's computer failed.  I had to reinstall Ubuntu on 
a new drive.  I had been using Backintime (root) for backing up the key 
files in /etc and /home on a separate hard drive.

In the new installation, I installed Backintime, but when I try to run 
it to restore the files it says that it cannot find any snapshots.  I 
did find a suggestion to copy the config file from the most recent 
snapshot to ~/.config/backintime/ which I did.  This did not help.  Any 
suggestions as to how either get Backintime to find the snapshots and 
restore the files, or alternatively to use something else to restore 
them?  I believe that BIT actually uses rsync and other things behind 
the scenes but I don't know how the files are saved, and if they are 
compressed or what.

I did try to just copy one of the folders from a snapshot to my home 
directory, but that didn't work (it wouldn't copy it).
