PCIC is seeking to hire an IT Specialist/Linux System Administrator,
Computational Support.

Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC)

The Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) was created to assess climate
impacts in the Pacific and Yukon Region of Canada. The goals of the Consortium
are to foster collaborative research, to strengthen the capacity to address
regional climate change and variability, and to provide the scientific basis for
climate policy development. PCIC is a regional climate service centre at the
University of Victoria that provides practical information on the physical
impacts of climate variability and change. Through collaboration with climate
researchers and regional stakeholders, PCIC produces knowledge and tools in

Challenge

The IT Specialist/Linux System Administrator works to build and maintain PCIC's
state of the art computational and storage infrastructure under the direct
supervision of the Lead for Computational Support. At present, PCIC maintains a
rack of Linux servers at the University of Victoria that host hundreds of
terabytes of high-resolution spatio-temporal climate data and model output.


Nature of Work

You will be a part of a talented and dedicated team that builds the
computational foundation for the climate services that PCIC provides. You will
have the opportunity to deploy enterprise-level solutions, and employ creative
and interesting problem-solving for our small and vibrant organization. This
position is ideal for an early-career professional who is passionate about
research and web service delivery technology. PCIC's working environment

Accountabilities
			
*	Work with Computational Support staff and Management to plan, budget and
facilitate purchasing of computer hardware.
*	Build servers and desktops.
*	Administer PCIC research and public-facing servers, minimizing downtime
in both cases and plan outages at reasonable times.
*	Actively participate in data management, backup and recovery.
*	Educate staff in systems best-practices
	
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and Experience
*	Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering
or a related field of study, or a commensurate level of experience.
*	Storage management at all levels of the stack (block, volume, file
system, network).
*	Network administration and security best practices
*	Linux system administration, preferably Debian. Experience maintaining
complex package dependency trees and the ability to build source packages when
necessary.
*	Working knowledge of NFS and Samba. Experience with ZFS and experience
with some cluster file system are an asset.

Ability
*	Ability to work with data storage, backup and recovery management at the
scale of tens to hundreds of terabytes.
*	Ability to implement remote system health monitoring.
*	Ability to plan, assemble, build and test server and desktop machines.
*	Ability to work effectively and collegially with others inside and
outside of the organization.
*	Ability to work with vendors to match organizational needs and resources
with available products.
*	Ability to communicate technical concepts to (non-computational)
scientific staff.
*	Ability to automate repetitive tasks with high-level scripting
languages.
*	Detail-oriented and the ability to multi-task and prioritize while
staying organized.

In addition, extra consideration will be given to candidates who possess:
*	Experience with Drupal CMS.
*	Experience with Apache's httpd and Tomcat.
*	Experience with PostgreSQL.
*	Experience with Infiniband networking on Linux.
*	Experience integrating systems with LDAP directory services.
*	Knowledge of Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup software.
*	Knowledge of Linux mdraid.
*	Ability to facilitate fair but flexible computational resource sharing.
*	Ability to collaborate on minor Windows desktop administration.

PCIC recognize that potential candidates may not necessarily possess all of the
knowledge, experience and abilities listed above but the successful candidate
will be able to demonstrate clear potential to quickly develop skills that are
required by the position.

This is an long term commitment
	
Weekly working hours
Full time (37.5 hours per week)
