[Discuss] Sound gone on XUbuntu 14.04 LTS

After working very well ever since I first installed 14.04 Beta, the sound has quit working on my netbook with the released version (it did work on this until a couple of days ago).  I tried the steps outlined in:

but this did not work. In particular, Step 4 in this is not possible because the PPA is not updated to 14.04 yet.

The internal microphone still works.  Sound does work OK if I boot into Windows, so it is not a hardware problem.

Any ideas on how to get the sound working again?
