[Discuss] recover files and foldes from USB pendrive?

By doing chkdsk /f as administrator in Windows 7, I was able to recover most of the files and folders retaining their names and other properties. There were a few that were put into "found" folders, but even those had the correct names so I could easily figure out where they should go.

Check out PhotoRec: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

I have successfully used it many times for exactly this purpose.

I have a pendrive that has quit working properly. In Windows, it is detected but says it has to be formatted. In LINUX it is not detected by the file manager, so I imagine the partition table has been corrupted.

I wonder if anyone has found a good, free data recovery tool for a situation like this. I have done some searches but not found anything appropriate so far. I think I did find something some time ago (and may even have it installed on one of my computers at home). However, I am away and only have my netbook with me and cannot remember what I might have used.

Any suggestions? I did try a couple of Windows free trial things (which did not work and even if they did, the free version is limited to 100M which won't help too much with my 64G drive).

Thanks for any help or advice.
