[Discuss] Networking oddity

Turned out to be a number of things:

nfs didn't work because I screwed up the exports file. Got this working first. Simple finger trouble.

vnc wasn't working because the default xstartup file calls /etc/X11/Xsession. When I tried vncviewer on the same host the window opened and KDE (I'm running Mint KDE) began to start (as it were) then crashed. Installing another wm (icewm for example) and changing xstartup fixed this. This problem was caused by the major difference between this install and the other three: all of them were onto systems which had previously been set up with a /home partition and had carried user setting across. The server was a clean install.

Finally - and I'm not sure why this works - regenerating the RSA host key for ssh fixed that problem. Found that one with a web search and confirmed that it seemed to be the problem by looking for sshd errors in auth.log.

An "interesting" experience.
