I don't know the answer to this question but I think you have to 
differentiate between desktop systems and laptop mobile devices. Laptop 
configurations are designed to sell to a wide range of customers but 
ones with different needs to those buying desktop systems. Light weight, 
mobility, long battery life, fast boot and recovery from hibernating 
after closing the lid or power saving mode, all command high prices for 
which customers are prepared to pay. Hence SSD tends to win on all these 
counts irrespective of cost per Gigabyte.

I have a 250 GB SSD in my desktop that contains my OS's and frequently 
used data and a 1 TB Hard Drive that contains infrequently used and 
large data files, and a backup for my SSD data refreshed daily by a 
cronjob. This is not the cheapest or most cost effective solution but I 
don't care because its lighting fast and I like it!
