What's the deal with CPU prices?

There are larger economies of scale.
Production is easier.

If you compare the relative price with CPUs 20 years ago,
factor in inflation and a manufacturing scalar 0.1%/yr for
improved process, a high end CPU should only be about $400.

In any other industry there would be charges by now.
