Possibly helpful shots in the dark...

Computer Bios pointing at wrong
device for boot.

Boot Flag not set on the
Linux Partition.

I don't recall Grub errors reporting
this way.

You mentioned that two years 
have passed. Is the linux mint
current it's now up to Mint 19.

A fresh install might cure the
issue.

Good luck, maybe someone else
will recognise the problem.
