I finally got access to my old gmail account so it was fortunate I
procrastinated creating a new one. :-)

So now I can post to this list again with my old gmail account (which
is the only one I have thanks to the above procrastination).

The original issue (once the BIOS upgrade triggered recovery mode) was
at the time the recovery script did allow me to verify via a
non-gmail email address, but they would not accept that verification
as proof of identity. However, today the dialog was different
(presumably because some long timeout/cooling off period had finally
expired), and it allowed me to verify by ordinary non-texting phone
which they did accept as proof of identity. So the net result was I
could finally recover the account, configure the recovery procedure
properly, and download the 5-days worth of email that had been
accumulating.

So I finally got this problem straightened out, but it sure was an
unexpected headache caused by my BIOS upgrade!
