Get a used one from  digital-rabbit to reduce the global resource burden.
The Apple-hate-myth is overblown. D.R. also have 'droid phones too, as I am told.

Otherwise just make a belt apparatus or sack and carry an obsolete PC clone, with a monitor, on your back.
Carry a big bag of quarters for use with, sparsely distributed, public phones.
You’ll be safer except for the low back pain, continual danger of electrocution in the rain, and troubles catching the bus.
The long term trauma to your body, and shortening of your life by decades, will surely make up for your concerns over Googles cloud infrastructure or Apples spinning rainbow disc.
On the upside, the police will always stop you to say hello because of the sack. Keep a big snake in there as a showpiece for the curious.

XCode comes free for MacOS. You can make your own apps for your iPhone.

The Android simulator is your go-to for open source development on ‘SkyNet' compatible phones. Be careful of the singularity or it’s imaginings, lest your phone begin to randomly identify dogs by size and color. 

The best policy is no phone. That way you’re days off remain sacrosanct, people will come to your house to eat food, laugh, and make eye contact if they are able, and your spine will never be stooped due to long hours responding to snapchat.
