[Discuss] Linux Friendly USB Wireless Dongles?

before he goes out and gets a dongle, check the output of "lspci -v" for
the wifi chip that's in there. there are a few wifi chipsets that you
can set up to automatically build drivers for (that just aren't included
in the kernel). i had a broadcom chipset in my last laptop i had to do
that for (using DKMS, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DKMS).

if he's running ubuntu, sometimes Software & Updates -> Additional
Drivers can automatically do it for you, too. he'd probably need to use
an ethernet cable to get things bootstrapped for that though.
