Bernie,

You may want to look at OpenWrt (openwrt.org) for your Minimal system 
with a firewall (keeping the barbarians out). Although you can get 
pre-compiled OpenWrt and packages, you can also build it yourself. It is 
NOT a desktop OS, however. Think of it more as a security/router 
appliance, which in my opinion is perfect for your border (or ISP) router.
