Stan beats me in age (but only by 3
years). I started using UNIX in the mid 80s. My favourite flavour
was Silicon Graphics' IRIX, but also used Solaris, Berkeley BSD
and AT&T UNIX.
During that time, I did a lot of scripting and programming.
I started playing with LINUX around 1995 but could not get a
working version on my home computer until about 1999 (Mandrake,
now Mandriva was the first of many I tried that would not work
with my PC at the time, including Red Hat, SUSE and Fedora).
I continue to learn new things. However, unlike when I was younger
and never forgot a date or telephone number, nor most things I
learned about UNIX/LINUX (and machine language and assembler for
many different computers, micro-programming, designing and writing
real time operating systems, many higher level languages such as
Algol, Simula, FORTRAN, PL-1, C, etc. as well as computing
hardware design), I now find that I tend to forget things even
faster than I learn them.
Part of the reason that I like to try new distributions earlier
than many of you recommend is that I do enjoy learning about the
new features and dealing with the challenges, as frustrating as
they might be.
A disadvantage of having such a good memory when you are young is
that you form the habit of not writing things down (such as dates
of meetings, telephone numbers, E-Mail addresses, etc.) and often
have to research the same thing again when you have problems, or
asking for advice/suggestions about the same problem when it crops
up again several months or years after you first encountered.

Thus, I greatly appreciate the patience of the VLUG members who
give me help and advice when things break.
