this issue. I tried two other places in the Calgary area with
Telus ISP and was never able to connect with Network Manager. No
problem at connecting to anything else anywhere I have been. Since
I try to avoid Telus anyway, and am not likely to be travelling to
anywhere that uses Telus for quite a while, I won't spend any more
time on it.
some searching, I have discovered that the problem is with
NetworkManager. Ubuntu 15.04 Live uses version 0.9.10.0. Ubuntu
16.04 Live uses 1.1.9.3 and the current version in my installed
16.04 is 1.2.0. Others have reported that they have been unable to
connect to networks that require Infrastructure mode since Ubuntu
16.04 was released.
I have found two workarounds:
1. Just work from Ubuntu 15.04 Live while I am visiting.
2. Connect the computer to an Ethernet cable from the modem/router
and install wicd. I did this with the Live 16.04 and was able to
connect to the network with the WiFi. That seems to work OK, and
I did not have to remove NetworkManager to do so.

I will continue to run 15.04 live on one computer and 16.04 Live
with wicd on the other. I may try to do that on the installed
version later on, though don't know if it is really worth it for
the short time I will be here.
Hello,

We have Telus WiFi router and just use WPA,etc.. Not sure why you
would
use infrastructure mode. Just alter your router settings to use
SSID and
a key(s). Works here with linux. Kubuntu 15~ish .

Thanks for the reply. It works fine with the Live CD of 15.04
(Infrastructure is one of the mode options and it is the default
so connection occurs correctly and automatically in that version).
It does NOT work in the installed 16.04 nor the Live CD version of
16.04. It appears that there has been change in the WiFi setup
between 15 and 16. Some people have had luck with other ISPs using
the client mode (default in 16.04), but no luck here. I have not
had any problem anyplace else during my travels nor at home, but
they were not TELUS networks.

I would not know how to change the router settings to SSID and
since it is not mine, I am a bit reluctant to fool around with it
in case I make a mess of it before I leave here.
