Install/Tweak Fest
Been wanting to try Linux, but can't bring yourself to do the install?
up for our next InstallFest and have a Linux guru apply their talents to get
Linux installed correctly on your machine.
The VLUG Install Fest is also a Tweak Fest. If you have Linux
already installed on your system, but are struggling with configuration, or
you want to learn how to compile the
Linux Kernel,
bring your machine and we'll have a Linux guru help you through your
struggles and teach you what you need to know.
The next installfest will be scheduled shortly. It will be held at the University of
Victoria.
You MUST please Sign Up if
you plan on bringing a computer in to be installed/tweaked so we can plan
our resources. Also, we will not accept a machine after
12:00 noon to ensure we have enough time for the install to
finish before our booked time at UVic expires.
If you're able to be an Installer/Tweaker for the event, please e-mail the installfest
organizer,
Pres@VLUG.org.

VLUG had its thirteenth Install/Tweak Fest on May 22, 2004 at UVic. It was
another successful event, with ~12 fresh installs or tweaks to existing
systems. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out with this event.
The highlight of the day was the hardware assembly of the two
boxes to be used for future VLUG presentations. These
systems were built from two bare-bones boxes
donated by Shuttle; two hard drives
and an optical drive donated by Phillipe Lajoie; and new components (optical
drive, CPUs, and memory modules). The new hardware was bought from Carl
Constantine at cost using VLUG reserve funds and monetary donations
collected as part of the donations campaign organized by Randy Esdon and
Alex Randell. A big thanks to everybody who donated their hardware, time,
profit margin, or money to this effort. Thanks to Carl for demonstrating how
to install hardware on one of the Shuttles. His HOWTO commentary was quite
useful particularly for those of us who have never assembled a box before.
Thanks also to Mike Pfleger for installing the hardware on the other donated
Shuttle.
The Fedora Core 2 distribution was easily installed on the presentation
boxes at the Install/Tweak Fest, and since then Alan Irwin, the VLUG
presentation box wrangler, has been doing additional work on each box
including an install of the Debian testing distribution with kernel 2.6, a
connection-tracking firewall, KDE and GNOME. A system for making full
backups is still in the planning stages. Once backups are available so the
Shuttle software can always be returned to a known good state, the plan is
to allow future VLUG presenters to check out these powerful boxes (2.4 GHz
CPU, 1GB RAM, 3D graphics, and sound) for the month or so before their
presentation with freedom to tweak one of the distros any way they like to
facilitate their presentation.

VLUG had its twelfth Install/Tweakfest on January 19, 2003 at UVic. From all
reports it was another successful day, with 15 people coming out to have
their machines worked on. Several fresh installs were made, and notable
tweaks were getting a video capture / tv tuner card working, setting up a
demo mini crossover network between two freshly installed linux boxes, and
an "everything working" install on a Panasonic Toughbook. We signed up one
new member and sold some hardware to boot.
Once again, thanks to all our hard working Linux gurus who spent the day
helping people out. You made this event a success.

VLUG sponsored its eleventh Installfest/Tweakfest on October 26, 2002 at the
University of Victoria. There were 12 people who came to either have their
computers installed with a new Linux distro or tweaked/tuned up. Most went
home happy campers. The install of Mandrake 9 (with most bells and whistles
like accessing a digital camera with GPhoto and syncing with a PalmPilot)
and the install of KDE on xinerama on Yellow Dog Linux on a legacy Mac were
a couple of highlights of the day. A big thank you to the official greeter,
the hardware gurus, and the software gurus for making this event such a
success.

Our tenth InstallFest was an overall success! Our installers were overwhelmed by the number of people who showed
up to have their linux box tweaked or get linux installed. The majority of the installs were for Redhat & Mandrake
versions of linux. We had around 21 machines, approximately 15 of which are now booting Linux!

Our ninth InstallFest went well except for one thing. It was a really sunny and warm day so only a few people managed to drop by. Fun was had by all and no one was hurt... all in all a great day.

The eighth installfest... does anyone remember what we did :)

The seventh installfest is over and we attempted to install 13 machines.
Several would not cooperate due to hardware problems, and one was not
completed due to time running out. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

Our sixth InstallFest was back in the larger room. Many machines including
one Mac for Bolen Books! Lots of fun was had by all.

Our fifth InstallFest was a little smaller... literally! The room we had booked
at UVic was a tad small, however, since only 10 people showed up with machines to be
installed it worked out great.

Our fourth InstallFest was interesting both because it was our first
of 1999 and because of the huge demand! 22 machines were brought
in, more than for the national event!
Because of this, we're planning on holding the events approximately
every two months instead of every four. This should help lower the
demand for any one event, plus means people don't have to wait as
long to get Linux installed.

Our third 'IF' was huge, with twenty one machines receiving
attention. A great deal of interest was expressed in the OS from
more mainstream users than we've seen in the past.

Our second 'IF' was well attended, although fewer people brought
machines compared to our last event. Unfortunately, the digital
camera was left at the office...

Our first 'IF' was a great success, with nine machines receiving
attention. As usual, discussions on several different topics
persisted the entire day.
