Announcements

Captain Meeting, Carl Constantine, opened the meeting shortly after 7pm, with lots of stuff to announce. Andrew Willard and Randy Esdon, our President and Membership Director respectively, were out of town, so Carl filled in for them, announcing that all the usual CDs were still available, in their current versions: SUSE, Corel, Storm, RedHat, Debian, Slackware, etc. Use the form on our Web site to order yours, please; because of the profusion of versions and distros, we are no longer pre-burning discs.

Carl also covered some of the benefits of club membership, including discounts at lots of businesses. Then he proceeded to news of interest:

  • Microsoft: GUILTY!! This isn't the absolutely last word, but the findings of law have been posted, you can download them, and they're pretty damning. The DOJ may force it into supreme court to skip a lengthy appeals process.
  • Perl 5.6 and Python 1.6 are both out
  • Staroffice 5.2 beta, is out, but "don't even bother," go get WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux.
  • 3DFX is buying someone (sorry, tape indistinct) for $156 million.
  • Mattel and Microsystems have settled out of court with those evil people who were bullying them - or at least with Eddy Jansson and our own Matthew Skala. Matthew got a dollar. There will still be US court wrangling involving the ACLU and mirror sites.
  • A German firm has trademarked "MP3" across Europe, claiming that it's an effort to keep the name out of the hands of MP3 opponents.
  • Handspring will be going IPO soon.
  • The list was moderated for a short time; it is now back to being unmoderated.
  • We have two new SIGs (special interest groups), for Debian users and for newbies.
  • The next InstallFest will be on April 29 at UVic Cornett A148.
  • Our T-shirts are available, in lots of sizes, for $20 each.
