I plan to be there. I am still frustrated with being unable to see the 
icons for my desktops in more recent versions of Gnome.  The best I can 
get is an icon for a windows switcher. I have to click on that, then 
select the workspace by number.
I am using XUbuntu on my laptop and notebook, both of which do show 
those Icons and give you an idea as to what is actually running in them.

  I have switched back to KDE for my main computers and it shows the 
icons for all the workspaces, and also shows all of the running programs 
in all workspaces. However, restarting cannot normally be done except by 
typing "sudo reboot" from a command line in a terminal, which is strange.

Any hints on these issues would be welcome.

I would also be interested in some discussion of various ways to do 
backups -- the pros and cons of these.
