Hmmm... I may have to bite the emacs bullet.

As an aside, I recall seeing a cartoon illustrating the learning curves of
different editors.  The one for vi was a very quick rise to a very low
plateau.  The one for emacs was a spiral...

You know when you fire up emacs you are told how, inter alia, to run the
tutorial.

It takes about 30-45 minutes, after which time you'll know what you need
to know to do what you want (and more).

It's worth it - I recommend it to my students.
