[Discuss] Skype alternatives

Thanks, everyone.

After learning a bit more about what to look for, I'm thinking
maybe Yak + Linphone [Yak recommends the X-Lite softphone, which
is a standard SIP client], with a possible low-end smart-phone,
so I don't have to lug a laptop around. Not sure if the Linphone-
-on-cellphone setup could take incoming calls, but then, I'm not
sure if I'd *want* to receive calls away from home. In any case
I wouldn't be getting a SIM card, just connect via regular
wireless hotspots.

I can also wire it to my land-line phone, keep my old number, and
pay less per month. Looks like it would also support 911 calls,
if necessary [although I hope that never is].

Viber's rates to regular phones around the world do seem better
than Yak's, but Viber can't quite replace my real phone. And I'm
not really a fan of Telus, was just slow to do anything about
them.

Cheers,
Patrick.
