personally, i always use the non-free nvidia drivers with ubuntu. have
you given those a shot? (settings->additional drivers. i'm using the
nvidia binary driver v331.38, which is working great for me)

> I may also bring my Ubuntu 14.10 computer in. After I upgraded it to 14.10 the display became very "wonky". I made things worse by trying to load a different NVIDIA driver.  It works fine with Ubuntu (K L or X as well) live DVDs, but now the display does not work at all with the installation. I have looked at a few things to try including setting "nomodeset" by editing the boot menu, but this did not help.
