I usually do as well. The current problem is that I am unable to see anything on the display so don't know how to access anything!  I could probably get a command line, but would not know how to install the non-free nvidia drivers from there.

personally, i always use the non-free nvidia drivers with ubuntu. have
you given those a shot? (settings->additional drivers. i'm using the
nvidia binary driver v331.38, which is working great for me)

It works fine with Ubuntu (K L or X as well) live DVDs, but now the display does not work at all with the installation.
