I don't think I would replace a working drive that has not failed nor
given any warnings, as "routine maintenance."  I think the risk that a new
drive will fail early in its life is significant, and unnecessary
replacements maximize that risk.  However, I run RAID and expect every
drive to fail eventually, if I don't replace it for upgrading reasons
first.
