[Discuss] "Upgrading" Ubuntu - showing workspaces on taskbar

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, and especially Alan for 
suggesting that I try KDE again.  I did not fix things in Gnome, but 
after installing all the KDE stuff and rebooting, I see that (at least 
in 13.10) it has a much more useful taskbar/panel.

I will keep working with it for a while and next time I reboot the 
Ubuntu 14.04 system, I will see if KDE works as well on it.
