Yes that worked. I cloned my OS to another partition with Clonezilla. 
The warnings on Clonezilla are a bit scary because it sensibly warns you 
that you are about to lose any data on the target partition but then 
gives a second warning that you will lose data on the whole drive. For 
example cloning from say sda1 to sdb2 it warns that you lose data on 
sdb2 but then goes on to say you will lose data on sdb!!

As predicted to be able to boot from the cloned partition you just need 
to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst on the cloned partition to point to that 
partition not the source. If you are just using this as a backup there 
is no point in doing that, unless you want to check its all there and 
working. However, if you want to move an OS to a different drive this 
would be useful. To make it a permanent fix you would need to run 
grub-install once you have booted into the clone and make sure the new 
menu.lst gets fixed properly since it gets updated when you update your 
kernel.
