I solved my problem when I realized that the Libre Office word processor 
handles simple flat files with n problems. So I just set up a 
spreadsheet with the right number of columns for my file. Bingo. No 
awkward downloads or anything beyond this 'poor brain's' comprehension. :O
Thanks for all the good suggestions.
BTW I downloaded abook, a program suggested by one of our group. It got 
lost between Symantec and my computer. The former swore up and down that 
it had downloaded it; my computer had no record of it. So what happened 
I don't know. It was after that the simple solution exploded in my head 
like a big Bertha shell. . .
