with thunderbird, go to the account settings control (right click on the 
account name and choose settings). go to synchronization & storage, and 
uncheck "keep messages for this account on this computer". that should 
stop it from downloading them all.

alternately, check out the sylpheed mail client 
(http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/), which is lighter weight than 
thunderbird and has an option to not download messages automatically as 
well. on low power computers, i use sylpheed over thunderbird as it's 
less resource intensive.
