Cost of living plus 20% for savings is usually a reasonable assessment.
Victoria is an expensive place to live. Can you afford the employee you actually need?
It really needs to be worthwhile for technical personnel to expend resources to move here for 6 months.
The actual saving from the job, above cost of living, need to be substantially greater than the cost of moving.
So, your hiring options end up coming from the local pool which can be a bit shallow.
The usual Victoria mantra, “You can hike, camp, and ski here. So we're paying less.”, doesn’t really fly.
People have those same recreational options over in Ontario and in the U.S.A. too.
The difference there is, you don’t need to spend $100 on a ferry ride each time you wish to access the rest of the planet.
Engineers start at $150,000 per year over there. Non-Engineering programmers $65,000.
