Thanks again, Ron. 
After 24 hours, XUbuntu is still working OK. I have fired up Google Chrome and it is still working. I will wait until tomorrow morning and if all is well, I will try Firefox again. Maybe all it took was to remove the error and to make sure that the screen saver was disabled. We will see what happens next.

Hi Ron, 
Everything is commented out in /etc/default/acpid. I am not sure if it is significant, but whenever I rebooted, I got a message saying something had crashed on the system. When I did further investigation, it was gdebi which had done so. I had used it to install Google Chrome. I removed that entry. The only thing I had installed using gdebi was Google Chrome since it would not install using the default software installer (said it was not compatible). After it "hung" this morning and I rebooted, I deleted the crash report and have not used Google Chrome on it for the rest of the day. So far, it is still working OK. I will try overnight without using Google Chrome or Firefox to see if it keeps working. If it does, I will try starting them again tomorrow one at a time. If it crashes after I start Chrome, I will remove it and perhaps install Chromium instead. I have not had trouble with Chrome in the past, and it works fine on the laptop LINUX installs. If it hangs after starting Chrome or Firefox I will try restarting acpid (it is running now) but won't do it until tomorrow.

BTW data transfers are now comparable to those on the Windows computer using the wired connection which is now working.

Does "systemctl restart acpid.service" fix things, even temporarily? 


Might be worth reviewing the contents of /etc/default/acpid too.
