Bernie,
While it is true that older eyes (I have them) find it harder to
distinguish between active and non-active windows (aka focus), Linux is
full of choice. If the defaults aren't working for you select something
else. In Linux Mint (which is based off Ubuntu) there is a "Settings
App" called "Appearance". You can change the colouring of the windows,
icons, fonts, etc.
As for detecting key press, key up, and so forth, I suggest you try
'xev'. It is a diagnostic tool that will show you both key down and key
up events as well as key scan codes and other good info.
