Hi Matthew:

I have never seen the symptoms you describe so it is certainly
possible the instructions you followed for turning off the semantic
desktop were simultaneously ineffective (still popups), but also went
too far (for the music player case).

A google search for the terms <kde disable semantic desktop> found
many hits including
<http://www.my-guides.net/en/guides/linux/how-to-disable-nepomuk-strigi-and-akonadi-in-kde4>
which is, I believe, identical to the simple instructions I followed
before to turn off the KDE semantic desktop with what appears to be
complete success. Anyhow, if you (or anyone else here who wants to try
KDE without the semantic desktop) ever try KDE4 again, I suggest that
you follow those instructions.
