[Discuss] ddrescue for progress indication during dd

Further to the recent discussion here of getting progress reports from dd:
I'm making some DVD image files now.  One of my discs was giving read
errors, so I tried using ddrescue to automatically re-read the flaky
sectors, and I realized that it may be nicer than dd even on good discs,
because it gives ongoing progress reports.  It doesn't show the total size
of the job (and thus time to completion) but one can determine that before
starting.
