I don't know if it is the best way, but I always use "dd" from a Live 
CD/DVD of LINUX-- doesn't matter what version or distribution. I use 
this for the root directory of any LINUX OS and for Windows. I have had 
to restore Windows HDs from the image I created, and I do that with dd 
in the other direction.
