[Discuss] Peculiar dd or dcfldd behaviour

Thanks. I did not realize that GParted could clone a partition to another! For Windows 7 C drive, it must be a clone as copying won't work. I have read in a couple of places that this does not work for Windows 7, 8 or 9.
I did find another way to do it using free Macrium Reflect. The cloned drive did work until I tried resizing the partitions (since I was moving it to a larger drive) with GParted. I probably goofed there. Anyway, I found that Macrium can resize the partitions while it is cloning so am trying it again that way. Macrium is a lot faster than dd or dcfldd (neither of which seem to work on this computer for some reason that I do not understand, nor have I been able to find any answer by internet searches) as it does not copy unused sectors.

I also found that the "bootable" Macrium USB memory drive that was created will not boot on my son's computer. I will try it on mine later.

We will see if my latest attempt at cloning with Macrium Reflect succeeds!

Not really, but GParted can copy partitions [including NTFS] from
one disk to another -- a simple copy/paste operation. So if you
don't have the same trouble with it that you've had with dd, why
not use GParted instead?

I kind of wonder what the actual problem is, btw, as this message
doesn't really solve it, just suggests a possible way to avoid it.
