Another option is to plan your system with multiple SSD as a part pf the 
design.

Get three additional smaller ones specifically for /tmp, /var   and /swap.

The idea of only ever having one 'disk' is a residual of older tech
thinking.

If you plan against the relative probability of failure, future
repairs become simply a matter of switching out the failed portion
of your file system. Anything that is mission critical should have some
redundancy (RAID ?) and automated backups.
