Patrick,
I know Gnome does something like this, I believe it uses udisk under the
covers.
$ ps -ef | grep udisk
cvmiller 4826 930 0 Sep19 ? 00:00:03
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor
root 4835 930 0 Sep19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/udisks2/udisksd
